Boxabl’s tiny houses cost under $50k and can be built in an hour
Boxabl has been impressive in the housing industry for its ability to set up tiny homes in just an hour and its relatively affordable price point of under $50,000.
The company wants to change the way people build homes by offering a fast and cheap alternative to the traditional method.
In an interview, Boxabl’s founder and director, Galiano Tiramani, discussed the company’s products and plans for the future.
One of the most common questions people have about Boxabl’s tiny homes is how they can receive services like plumbing and electricity once they are set up. Tiramani explained that the company’s first product is a 20-by-20-foot room equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living area. This room can be set up in an hour on a prepped site with utilities and a foundation. The idea is to dramatically reduce the cycle time for builders and developers, allowing them to deploy fully finished rooms from the factory in just a few hours. This streamlined process is expected to significantly lower the cost and time it takes to build a home.
Tiramani also addressed concerns about needing a concrete slab to support the tiny homes. He explained that the rooms are compatible with any different foundation type and that the company has a new, better, and lower-cost way of building. Boxabl is making many of these buildings at once in a factory to make them faster and cheaper.
As for the price point of the tiny homes, Tiramani stated that the starting price is $50,000, but the price for their newest product, the Casita, is determined on a case-by-case basis due to the high demand and inflation. The company's waitlist has over 130,000 names of people who want to buy a Casita, and the wait time to deliver the homes is uncertain. The company is working as hard as it can to scale up production and meet the demand for its product.
The company set up its first factory just a year ago, and it now has a second factory next door that it'll be moving into soon. They're also working on a third factory that they hope will be billion-dollar.
Shipping costs, ranging from $3 to $10 per mile, also add to the final price of the tiny homes. For example, shipping a house from Las Vegas to New York could cost up to $25,000 on top of the purchase price. However, because the homes fold up, shipping costs are significantly less than those of a comparable modular home, making them more cost-effective for buyers.
Tiramani said that the tiny homes can be used in many different places. For example, they can be used as accessory dwelling units in backyards, to build little villages of homes, or even to make bigger developments. The company’s rooms can be stacked and connected, making them suitable for different building types, from traditional single-family homes to large multifamily apartment buildings.
Lastly, Tiramani discussed the possibility of working with cities to give homeless people a place to live. He explained that Boxabl has received significant interest from different local governments and is working to get housing out there to increase the supply of affordable housing and help those in need.
In conclusion, Boxabl's tiny homes are a unique way to solve the affordable housing crisis because they can be built quickly and for less money than traditional homes.
